Dr. Fourniller received notification on yesterday that she won the 2019 Graduate Pedagogical Award from the GSU Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Kerry Ann Wallert, an Educational Policy Studies, Social Foundations Ph.D. Student at GSU, wrote the nomination and shared with CETL how Dr. Fournillier created an internship for her and guided her work as a teaching intern and student. Here is an excerpt from her winning nomination:
Dr. Fournillier typically serves on 25-30 dissertation committees. Spanning the programs in the College of Education and Human Development, she faithfully serves doctoral students on their journey to dissertation and graduation. It is not uncommon to find her reading 2-3 dissertations each week, providing copious notes to each graduate student. Dr. Fournillier believes it is her duty to strength and grow each graduate student before, during, and after the dissertation process. She is a true support to all students, and there are many who would be lost without her guidance, dedication, and commitment. Congratulations to Dr. Fourniller!

Name: Elizabeth K. Jeffers
Year graduated: Spring 2018 Degree and program: PhD, Educational Policy Studies, Social Foundations, Qualitative Research in Education certificate Q: What made you choose Georgia State University and the College of Education & Human Development over other schools in the area/country? Why the EPS dept and/or RMS program? A: Georgia State University’s College of Education and Human Development recruits and provides scholarships to doctoral students from around the world. Former and current faculty members in the Department of Educational Policy Studies’ have a robust history of scholarship in socio-cultural foundations of education, sociology of education, history of education, black education, urban education, etc. I applied to this program hoping for the opportunity to study with these scholars whose work was impacting education. Q: What is your current occupation? A: I am an Assistant Professor at the University of New Orleans in the College of Education, Liberal Arts and Human Development. Q: What fascinates you about research? What has surprised you about what you’re learning/have learned? A: What fascinates me about research is that there is always a new approach and a new angle to see and understand phenomenon. I love teaching others about the multiple possibilities of research and supporting my students as they break out of the limits that they have been conditioned to stay within by using their own voices and knowledges as a pivotal part of their research. Q: Is there a professor you’d like to give a shout out to? A: Dr. Fournillier because she believed in me and pushed me beyond what I could see for myself. Even when she is across the ocean and millions of miles away, Dr. Fournillier’s voice is always there! I am fascinated by bringing what I have learned and am still learning about research methodology from Dr. Fournilier, and also Dr. King, to my current doctoral students. The recent articles and books that they have written together with their students are increasingly helpful to me and my own students as we work in ways that would not be possible without both of their paradigmatic contributions to research methodology. I learned so much from Dr. Fournillier and Dr. King’s approaches to methodology and pedagogy, and they have inspired me to be a part of something more. Q: What tips can you give a student just starting to help them be successful? A: Make sure to attend Dr. Fournillier’s writing retreat at Red Top Mountain! Q: Give us either a favorite quote, a song lyric or poem, or something a professor said to you that you find inspiring. A: “Just let it go! Once, you let it go, then the blessings will come!” – Dr. Fournillier
This video is part of a duoethnographic paper presented at ICQI 2018. Melissa Speight Vaughn, PhD describes her border crossing experience with then methodologist/now colleague Dr. Janice B. Fournillier. This video testimony reveals the power of spirituality and place in qualitative research. (Speight Vaughn, 2018)
Thank you so much, Dr. Fournillier! I truly appreciate you collaborating with me on this project and taking valuable time out of your day to speak with me. I feel so blessed to have you in my corner! You have no idea how much it means to have your consistent support these past few years. This post-doc stage has been difficult, but I thank you for believing in me and my work. You motivate and inspire me and so many others, in so many ways. Warmly,
Charity Charity T. Gordon, Ph.D. I excitedly participated in the 'Writing Retreat' four times while working on different phases of my academic scholarship as a doctoral student. I elected to participate each summer with great anticipation of achieving my writing goals, which I always achieved! I believe that I was only able to achieve my writing goals because of the dedicated one-on-one assistance provided by Dr. Fournillier, who is an exceptional interdisciplinary scholar, educator, and facilitator. Dr. Fournillier reads, thinks, inquires, and writes outside of the proverbial box and thus encourages and supports others to do so as well. In doing so, I believe that those of us who lean in and surrender to writing as a process--writing as praxis, we emerge as reflective writers. Reflective writers who emerge empowered with our own authentic thoughts and voice, that once presented/published help empower others to think, question, write, rethink, requestion, and rewrite engaging and evocative bodies of works that substantively contribute to our respective fields of knowledge and practice. -Demetricia "Chell" Hodges Skinner, Ph.D.
Dr. Fournillier serves as Natasha Johnson's Dissertation Chair/Major Advisor. When asked to share a reflection, Natasha sent this video of her 3MT presentation, which placed second overall and won the people's choice award. Natasha stated that "it is something that I am really proud of (and it directly involves Dr. Fourniller)!"
